A Fine Balancing Act
JONATHAN, grade 7
Why are sports important to you?
Well, I play three sports — soccer, basketball, and I run track. I like playing and competing in basketball the most because it gives me a chance to bond with my peers outside of the classroom in a more fun way. I am also kind of a small person and it pushes me to the best of my abilities to play against bigger people and have a bigger challenge and obstacle to get through.
What’s your favorite class this year?
I am a very competitive person and I like to prove my point, so the Speech and Debate class has really helped me argue my case and taught me how to be a great speaker. And the teacher has been a pretty special person to me because we are like friends, but she pushes me to always do my best because she knows I can. This has helped me be a stronger learner and improve in a lot of my classes.
How do you balance your time between homework and practice and games?
I try to get as much homework as I can done during tutorial during school, so that way after practice I can get home around 6 p.m. and get all my homework done by 7 to 8 p.m. If I have too much work that I can’t get done, I advocate for myself and ask my teachers if I can turn it in at a different time.
Has coaching improved your game?
Well, for basketball my dad was my coach and he really helped me before the season on and off the court to work on my game. I really liked how he didn’t take it easy on me and pushed me to try my best.
